New Stop Sign Could Make Intersection Easier for Drivers

A new stop sign on River Street could make it easier for cars pulling out of Bridge Street.

An intersection near Beverly Depot could be made safer with the addition of another stop sign, according to one City Councilor.

Another stop sign should be added to the intersection of Bridge and River streets, according to Councilor Maureen Troubetaris of Ward 1. She has submitted an order making the request to the City Council. The order is now in the hands of the council’s Legal Affairs Committee.

Troubetaris said that she would leave it up to the Police Department and traffic experts to determine the best spot for a new stop sign. Right now, there’s a stop sign on Bridge Street for traffic headed eastbound when it reached River Street.

The intersection is near Salem Plumbing and Supply, Moynihan Lumber and Ryal Side Auto, just up from Beverly Depot.

Traffic on River Street flows without a stop sign both northbound and southbound. A new stop sign on River Street – making it a two-way stop sign at the intersection – would make it easier for traffic to pull out from Bridge Street, she said.
