First-Ever Block Party to Take Over Cabot Street Saturday

The first of two downtown block parties will happen on Saturday night, with a bar, live music and food.

Dinner, drinks and live music all in the middle of Cabot Street on a summer evening – it will happen for the first time this weekend.

The event, dubbed “The Block,” has been organized by a committee of a dozen volunteers working with Beverly Main Streets.

The centerpiece of the event will be live music and a bar.

The idea for the event came from Mayor Bill Scanlon a few months ago, said Heather Wolsey, Main Streets Marketing Coordinator, and he asked Main Streets to organize it.

“We pulled this together very quickly,” she said.

The event runs from 5:30-9:30 p.m. and is open to all ages, she said, but will not include any children-focused events. There will be some bubbles and hula hoops for children, she said.

"Everyone is welcome but it is geared toward adults," Wolsey said.

A survey conducted earlier this year by Main Streets found that survey respondents were looking for more to do for adults.

The date was selected "because we though people are always looking for something fun to do on the weekends." The second block party will happen on the first Saturday of Homecoming in August.

Several local restaurants will be selling food along the street and restaurants along Cabot Street will all, of course, be open. A pop-up bar will also be part of the festivities and local band Caspian will play.

“They’ve played all over the world but Beverly is their hometown,” Wolsey said.

Caspain is bring along three bands that will also play at the event.

A Twitter contest that will be held during the event will also be announced before things kick off on Saturday.

Cabot Street will be closed between Federal and Pond streets beginning at 4 p.m. in advance of the start of the event at 5:30 p.m.
