Brimbal Avenue Rezoning Forum Planned for Tuesday Night

Welcome to “5 Things,” your daily source for community events, happenings in the city and other little tidbits of information. Here are five things you need to know on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

1. Frigid: We’re headed straight into the deep freeze on Tuesday, with the forecast calling for a high temperature around 20 degrees. Clouds will be around most of the day with snow moving in during the late afternoon or evening.

2. Brimbal: The Centerville Improvement Society is hosting an information session on Tuesday night at the CIS Hall on Essex Street to discuss the Feb. 8 speciual vote on rezoning property off Brimbal Avenue. The forum at 7 p.m. is designed to talk about "what is at stake and what the facts are." It will run until 8:30 p.m.

3. State of the State: Gov. Deval Patrick will deliver his final State of the Commonwealth speech at 7 p.m. from the House Chambers on Beacon Hill. Patrick will not seek reelection this November and the state’s next governor will deliver the speech next January. Check television listings to find a channels that will air the speech.

4. Governor: Speaking of the race to become the next Governor of Massachusetts, Suffolk University is hosting a series of discussions with gubernatorial candidates during the next few weeks. On Tuesday, the series hosts Joe Avellone, a Democrat from Wellesley, during the free lunchtime event from noon-1:30 p.m. in the first-floor function room of Sargent Hall at 120 Tremont St. in Boston. It is free and open to the public.

5. Books: The Beverly Public Library's Evening Book Discussion Group meets on Tuesday night, as it does on the third Tuesday each month. It starts at 7:30 p.m. and this month's title is "Bring Up the Bodies" by Hilary Mantel.
