Congressman Ed Markey leads Gabriel Gomez by 17 points.
A new Suffolk University/7NEWS (WHDH) poll shows a strong lead for Democratic U.S. Congressman Edward Markey over Republican businessman and former U.S. Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez in the race for the U.S. Senate special election. The poll of 500 likely voters has Markey at 52 percent and Gomez at 35 percent. Eleven percent of voters in the poll were undecided. A third-party candidate, Richard Heos of the Twelve Visions Party, got 1 percent and another 1 percent refused to respond. David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center in Boston, said along with the announcement of the poll that Markey has "a large lead over his Republican opponent who voters are unsure about." About 15 percent of Beverly voters went to the polls on Tuesday to have a say on which candidates will go to the U.S. Senate general election in June.
Voters in Beverly largely matched the statewide votes in deciding on the candidates that will advance to the June 25 special election for U.S. Senate. Republican Gabriel Gomez received more than half of the votes on the Republican ballots in Beverly in the three-way race. Gomez received 638 votes from the Republicans and unenrolled voters who took a Republican ballot. Former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan received 357 votes and state Rep. Daniel Winslow got 208 votes. On the Democratic side, Ed Markey topped the ballots in Beverly with 63.5 percent, or 1,797 votes to Stephen Lynch's 1,021 votes. One of the three Republicans running for the open U.S. Senate seat will visit Beverly on Thursday afternoon.
A former county and federal prosecutor running for the state's open seat in the U.S. Senate will visit Beverly on Thursday with a planned visit with the City Council president. Republican Michael Sullivan plans a stop on his "Tested and Trusted Tour" on Thursday from 5-5:30 p.m. at Super Sub on Cabot Street. According to Sullivan's campaign, Sullivan will be joined at the campaign stop by City Council President Paul Guanci, who owns Super Sub. A Beverly man, Matt St. Hilaire, works as a campaign strategist for Sullivan. Before arriving in Beverly, Sullivan has stops planned in Lowell and Andover. Candidates for the Democratic nomination for the state's open U.S. Senate seat squared off in Lowell Monday night.
U.S. Congressmen Stephen Lynch and Edward Markey met in their second debate Monday ahead of the Democratic U.S. Senate special primary in a contest that contained few fireworks outside of an exchange on health care. The debate, held at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and sponsored by the college and the Boston Herald, lasted about 45 minutes and touched a wide variety of issues on which the two Democrats mostly agreed. An early question was asked about the candidates' positions on the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare.
