Barrel House Brings Bistro-Meets-Classic-Bar to Beverly

Find out what's in store at Barrel House American Bar on Cabot Street.

Sean Maher admits he and his restaurant co-owners were being selfish when they opened Barrel House American Bar on Cabot Street last month. "We basically wanted to do a restaurant like the type we enjoy going to in Boston," he said. "For selfish reasons, wanted a restaurant like this closer to home. The area had nothing like this, so we thought it would be a good niche to fill." But selfishness has worked in Maher's favor, because so far, he said Beverly's response to their bisto-meets-classic-bar concept has been positive. Beverly Patch sat down with Maher recently. What can patrons expect when they visit Barrel House?  On the menu, Maher said specialties include charcuterie, beef tartar, artisan cheeses, and oysters, all prepared by …

The Wild Horse Cafe on Cabot Street is now run by two men who met at 15 Walnut in Hamilton.

Two men who met while working at 15 Walnut Bistro in Hamilton have partnered to take to helm at a well-known Beverly restaurant. The Wild Horse Café in Beverly is now being run by Matt Blanchard and Sam Hunt. Hunt was formerly the executive chef at 15 Walnut and Blanchard ran the bar. The both started working there in 2009 and helped transform it from Indigo to 15 Walnut. “The whole time we were saying ‘we should get our own place,’” Blanchard said. And last week they did. The two men are now managing partners of what was formerly Brenden Crocker's Wild Horse Tavern on Cabot Street. The new name is Wild Horse Cafe and it will reopen today, Jan. 2. Blanchard said the two had been looking for a restaurant to buy for a while. The Wild Horse …

Home-based business Organization Plus celebrates its 30-year anniversary in Beverly.

It's been thirty years since Nancy Black launched her home-based business Organization Plus, in Beverly, but she said it's not uncommon to still receive the question 'what exactly does an organizer do?' Back in 1983, Black was asking herself the same question. It was then that Black, helped a financial planner organize her office before she knew that there was such a profession.  "[The client] invited me to my first networking event and I met someone who told me she was an organizer," Black said. "It evolved from there." Now, with Black's extensive knowledge of organizing, she's helped customers to transform their spaces from clutter to clean. Freeda's Pizza & Calzones, Coming to North Beverly This November

Freeda's will replace the Upper Crust in the North Beverly Plaza.

Freeda's Pizza and Calzones, coming this November to the North Beverly Plaza, isn't your typical mom and pop pizza shop.  Sure, the Guevara family has been operating Mario's Pizza in North Reading for 30 years. And, yes, mom and pop, in this case, Alfina and Romeo, are the president and vice president of the company.  But operations director Al Guevara says Freeda's, named after his mother, Alfina, whose nickname was Freeda when she grew up in Sicily, isn't the average.  With gourmet pizzas baked in a special brick oven straight from Italy,  Guevara assures customers they'll be able to find quality food and excellent service, in a timely manner. Guests will order their meals from the two 60 inch LED screen menus, and pizzas will be …

Beverly Native Mazzaglia Has Passion For Hair (And Lack Of!)

Rejuvenate Hair Loss Recovery Laser Therapy Clinic is located at the Cummings Center.

Lifelong Beverly resident Amanda Mazzaglia knows how devastating hair loss can be.  When she began noticing clumps of her hair falling out at an alarming rate, she said "medical doctors, dermatologists, endocrinologists, all presented various forms of hopelessness that sent me into a depression." But after six years of research and finding a successful treatment, Mazzaglia is now bringing her expertise to the North Shore, opening Rejuvenate Hair Loss Recovery Laser Therapy Clinic at the Cummings Center in Beverly.  "It is true that hair loss will not kill you, and has no detrimental effect on your physical health (hence why insurance companies will not cover treatment)," she said. "However, the negative effects on ones mental disposition …

Seasonal Flavors Spice Up Marino's Cafe Menu

Marino's Cafe adds new seasonal food and drink to menu.

With the start of the new season, Marino's Cafe is bringing a fresh menu to the table. Endicott College alum Torie Fansworth said she and co-owner, Beverly native Anthony Marino, chose to revamp the menu by chiseling it down and "sticking true to our convictions."  Those convictions include signature seasonal items that will change throughout the year. Since the cafe sees many regulars, Fansworth said it's important to keep things fresh.    Before the changes, Fansworth said there were so many different menu options, and because everything is made-to-order, the wait time for customers was too long.  "It's not overwhelming anymore," she said.  Autumn specials right now include soups like french onion and potato and leek, and at the bar …

'Ridiculous Amounts of Fun' At CrossFit Variance

Reading Firefighter Paul Dalton brings CrossFit back to Beverly.

Hamilton resident Paul Dalton expected to open his brand new CrossFit Variance facility in Beverly in July--but when customers were banging down the door at 126 Park St. in June, he opened up early, and said it's been a success ever since.  Dalton, a Reading firefighter and paramedic, has played sports since he was a kid, and he said if there was a workout better than CrossFit, he'd be doing it. So, what exactly is CrossFit? Dalton explained it as "a super effective, super safe, method of training that incorporates both body weight movements like yoga, and external resistance like weight lifting. We jump, push, pull, run, sprint, row, we mix it up constantly, only repeating some workouts once in a while. And it's fun-that's the killer part…
