Why Are Some Sidewalks Not Cleared?

Some residents have asked what they can do about sidewalks that have not been cleared of snow.

There is no city ordinance requiring that sidewalks be shoveled, but Director of Public Services and Engineering Michael Collins encourages everyone to help out in front of their property.

Several years ago an ordinance was proposed that would require residents to clear the sidewalk in front of their property and proposed a $50 fine for violators. It was not adopted.

"Joe Citizen needs to do their part and then look left and right to see if they can help a neighbor," Collins said. "We don't and can't do all sidewalks."

He also urged plow contractors to be considerate about where snow is pushed.

"Often contractors push driveway snow on to sidewalks making it much harder for everyone," he said.
