West Nile Found in Beverly Mosquito

The first case of West Nile Virus in a mosquito in Beverly was reported Friday.

A mosquito in Beverly has tested positive for West Nile Virus for the first time this summer, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and Beverly Health Director Bill Burke announced on Friday afternoon. 

The positive test came from a mosquito and there have been no human or animal cases of West Nile virus in Beverly this year.

West Nile is most commonly transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. The state health department said in an advisory issued on Friday that West Nile can infect people of all ages, but that people over the age of 50 are at a higher risk for severe infection.
