Mosquito Spraying Planned for Wednesday Night

Sections of Beverly will be sprayed for mosquitoes on Wednesday night after a positive test for West Nile Virus last week.

Specific neighborhoods of Beverly will be sprayed in an attempt to kill infected mosquitoes on Wednesday night after a positive test of West Nile Virus last week, the city government announced on Monday afternoon.

The announcement was made in a Swift 911 citywide phone message at about 3 p.m.

The spraying will be conducted by the Northeast Massachusetts Mosquito Control District in the Raymond Farms and Shingleville neighborhoods and parts of Ryal Side. The exact areas of spraying are shown of the attached map, supplied by the Beverly Department of Health.

“Consider staying indoors when the spray truck is in the immediate area of your home, and close windows and shut off fans and air conditioners until the truck passes,” the city said in its announcement.

The “targeted adulticide treatment” is designed “to reduce mosquito populations” in the area of the city where a positive West Nile Virus sample of mosquitoes was found last week. An announcement about the positive test was made on Friday afternoon.

In addition to the spraying, the city reminded residents to remember to take personal precautions against mosquitoes by doing things such as using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves or other protective clothing, minimizing outdoor activity between dusk and dawn and eliminating standing water around your home.

To see detailed information about the spray treatment, including the material label and a West Nile Virus Public Health Fact Sheet, are available on the city website and at the Beverly Health Department at the Senior Center on Colon Street.
