Crossing Gate Problems Causing Evening Delays

A problem with railroad crossing gates in Beverly was causing delays on Monday night.

A problem with the railroad gates in Beverly was causing delays on the roads and rails on Monday night.

It started at about 6 p.m. when the crossing gates on Elliott Street (Route 62) started to malfunction. A traffic report for the area at about 6:30 p.m. showed congestion along Elliott Street between McKay Street and Rantoul Street, plus down McPherson Drive, Beckford Street and other area streets. Google Maps was estimating that a drive through the area was taking about twice as long as usual.

The problem with the gates had also delayed at least three MBTA commuter rail trains - train 131, which leaves North Station in Boston at 5:30 p.m., plus two inbound trains - train 182 from Newburyport at 5:45 p.m. and train 130, the 5:25 p.m. train from Newburyport. All of the trains were delayed 20-25 minutes.
