Bridge Closed After Sailboat Runs Aground

A bridge across the Bass River is closed on Wednesday evening after a sailboat ran aground outside the channel.

The Hall-Whitaker Bridge is closed on Wednesday evening until a sailboat that ran aground can be freed.

Beverly Police said in a Facebook post at about 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday that the bridge "is stuck in the open position," meaning that boats can pass through but it is closed to vehicles.

The bridge carries Bridge Street over the Bass River and connects the downtown area (near Moynihan Lumber and Bowl-0-Mat) to the Ryal Side neighborhood.

"A sailboat is aground outside of the channel preventing the bridge from closing," police said. "The bridge will remain open until the sailboat is removed."

Low tide is scheduled to occur at about 9:30 p.m. while high tide is at about 3:15 a.m. on Thursday. The depth of the river is largely dependent on the tides. The bridge clearance is 3 feet at low tide and 10 feet at low tide, according to the Bass Haven Yacht Club, which is upriver from the bridge.
