Endicott College Student Aids Single Parent Programs with First Doctoral Research Fellowship

Beverly, MA - Endicott College Ed.D. in Educational Leadership doctoral student Nicole Bingham (Salem, MA), was recently awarded a research fellowship to work in the Center for Residential Student Parent Programs at Endicott College. As a single parent student herself, this project takes on a personal hue as Nicole works to create comprehensive resource lists to help single parents find specialized support services.

The Doctoral Fellowship was founded this year by Endicott College President Dr. Richard Wylie, and will be awarded annually in the form of a Teaching or Research Fellowship. The Educational Leadership program at the Van Loan School at Endicott College traditionally includes apprenticeships and internship opportunities; however this Fellowship allows students to go above the application of coursework and promotes scholarship within the institution by integrating doctoral students into the life and work of faculty members.

In her second year of the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership program, Nicole will be matched with a mentor, Center for Residential Student Parent Programs Director Autumn Green, to provide research support for three projects: the New England Student Parent Provider Pilot Study, the Jeremiah-Endicott Urban Boston Partnership Pilot program, and the National Survey of Residential Student Parent Programs. Her work will help create a national database of single parent programs and academic programs helping both residential and non-residential student parents.

“College is an option for all students, as long as they can find the programs that meet their needs,” said Ms. Bingham, who earned her undergraduate degree as a single parent at Suffolk University. “My work with Dr. Green will connect me with other moms and I hope to use my own life experience to help empower them to find purpose in their own education. And for myself I have an opportunity to grow with this Fellowship by advancing my research skills and building a network of people working in this field.”

Dr. Autumn Green said: “Ms. Bingham brings to the fellowship her experience and passion for education policy and program development, her personal connection to the focus of the center, and her experience working with international students and English language learners at the International High School in Lawrence, Mass. This experience will serve well in all three of the research projects.”
