5 Things To Know, April 8: Learning About 'The Real Shutter Islands’

A great way to start the day with a quick look at the events and happenings in the city.

Welcome to “5 Things,” your daily source for community events, happenings in the city and other little tidbits of information. Here are five things you need to know on Monday, April 8.

1. Possibly Perfect: The forecast for Monday sounds like it may be a nearly perfect springtime day. The sky is expected to be sunny with a high temperature in the upper-50s.

2. Fenway: Monday is a holiday, of sorts, in Boston and New England as the Red Sox return home to Fenway Park for the first time this season. The team is 4-2 and is taking on the Baltimore Orioles at 2 p.m.

3. Gun Control: North Shore Community College, which has a campus in the Cummings Center in Beverly, is hosting a forum on gun control at its Danvers campus on Monday. The event, titled "Gun Ownership: Looking Beyond the Second Amendment" is sponsored by the college's Interdisciplinary Studies and Criminal Justice Departments. Panelists will include U.S. John Tierney (D-Salem), Salem Police Chief Paul Tucker and Jim Wallace, Executive Director of the Gun Owners' Action League. It runs from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in room 119 at the Math and Sciences Building.

4. Musical Photos: Beverly High School sophomore Alex Walsh has entered an online contest that could win the high school $12,000 worth of music equipment. The contest runs through Monday and you can vote once per day.

5. Islands: The Monday Mornings program at Beverly Public Library this week brings in a speaker about the Boston Harbor Islands. The program starts at 9:30 a.m. but refreshments start at 9 a.m. The program, designed for seniors, is free and open to all. Chris Klein will speak about the “The ‘Real Shutter Islands’ and discovering the Boston Harbor Islands.
