Mayor's Reception to Highlight Park's Carriage House

Five things to know - a great way to start the day with a quick look at the events and happenings in the city.

Welcome to “5 Things,” your daily source for community events, happenings in the city and other little tidbits of information. Here are five things you need to know on Friday, Aug. 9.

1. Rain: A heavy shower or thunderstorm is expected to roll through at some point on Friday, with gusty winds and temperatures in the 70s to around 80 degrees. The humidity will stick around, plus there is a slight chance of some minor flooding if the rain ends up super-heavy at some point.

2. Carriage House: The Lynch Park Carriage House will host Friday night’s Mayor’s Reception, a newly added event as part of Beverly Homecoming. The event is $50 per person and runs 5:30-9:30 p.m. with beer, wine and food included. The event is designed to show of the progress that has been made to renovate the waterfront building and raise money for further work. Tickets can be purchased at Casa de Moda, Henry’s Market and the mayor’s office at City Hall.

3. Free: It is again Free Fun Friday, with the Highland Street Foundation offering free admission to six different museums and cultural sites in the state. The closest one to use is in Boston, where The Sports Museum will be part of the event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also offering free admission on Friday is Battleship Cove in Fall River, Ocean Explorium in New Bedford, The Eric Carle Museum in Amherst and The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster.

4. Leads: The North Shore Chamber of Commerce gets together on Friday for its North Shore Business Leads Group, where “many types of businesses who are intently focused on being a marketing force for each other” get together from 8-9:30 a.m. at the Chamber offices, just over the town line on Cherry Hill Drive in Danvers. The cost is $25.

5. Gear for Grades: Friday marks the final day for Citizens Bank’s “Gear for Grades” program, which collects new school supplies such as pencils, folders, notebooks, rulers and other supplies at bank branches. There are two Citizens Bank branches in Beverly – one inside each of the two Stop and Shop stores on Enon Street and Elliott Street. The 6,600 backpacks packed with school gear will be distributed to students in mid-August.
