Holiday Wine Tasting Saturday at Henry's

Welcome to “5 Things,” your daily source for community events, happenings in the city and other little tidbits of information. Here are five things you need to know on Friday, Dec. 20.

1. 40s: The temperature will get into the 40s on Friday for the first time in a while, with a high temperature expected in the mid to upper-40s. It will be cloudy with a light south wind.

2. Toys: North Shore 104.9 radio, which studios in North Beverly, and State Senator Bruce Tarrhave again teamed up this year for the Annual North Shore Holiday Toy Drive. It wraps up on Friday - the final day to drop off a toy donation at any of the collection locations, including Dawson’s Hardware and the Beverly Chamber of Commerce office at Cummings Center. It is the 18th straight year that the Republican from Gloucester has held the toy drive, with some of the collected toys going to Beverly Bootstraps.

3. Ribbon: The ribbon will be cut at AYN Wellness on FMayor Scanlon with his final Chamber Ribbon Cutting before his retirement. AYN Wellness is at 100 Cummings Center, Suite 335A and the ribbon-cutting will happen at noon with food, refreshments and a door prize.

4. Solstice: Saturday is Dec. 21, the winter solstice and the shortest day of the year that marks the start of winter. There will be just 9 hours and 32 minutes of sunlight and after Saturday, each day will gradually get longer until June 21. Officially, winter will start at 12:11 p.m. on Saturday.

5. Tasting: Henry's Wine Cellar is hosting one of its wine tasting on Saturday - this one with a holiday theme. Bruce Abby of Ruby Wines will be there for a tasting from 2:30-5:30 p.m. on Saturday. He'll have wines such as a 2010 Chateau Montelena, Cabernet Sauvignon and a 2007 Masi Amarone della Valpolocella Riserva.
